BEING A SERVANT

This week in our study, To Be a Disciple of Jesus Christ, we are going to look at servanthood. Jesus gave many examples of servanthood during His time here on earth. We will begin by looking at an example in the Book of John:

John 13:3-7 3 Jesus, knowing that the Father had given all things into His hands, and that He had come from God and was going to God, 4 rose from supper and laid aside His garments, took a towel and girded Himself. 5 After that, He poured water into a basin and began to wash the disciples’ feet, and to wipe them with the towel with which He was girded. 6 Then He came to Simon Peter. And Peter said to Him, “Lord, are You washing my feet?” 7 Jesus answered and said to him, “What I am doing you do not understand now, but you will know after this.

WHO’S JOB IS IT TO WASH THE FEET OF A GUEST?

WHAT DO YOU THINK  JESUS IS SHOWING HIS DISCIPLES HERE? (please share your thoughts with the group) (Phil. 2:3-4; 1 Peter 4:10)

Let’s look at another example Jesus gave us:

Mark 10:42-45, 42 But Jesus called them to Himself and said to them, “You know that those who are considered rulers over the Gentiles lord it over them, and their great ones exercise authority over them. 43 Yet it shall not be so among you; but whoever desires to become great among you shall be your servant. 44 And whoever of you desires to be first shall be slave of all. 45 For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many.”

WHO DOES JESUS SAY YOU SHOULD BE A SERVANT TO? (Luke 14:7-11, 18:9-14)

AS A DISCIPLE OF CHRIST WHERE AND HOW CAN YOU BE A SERVANT?

Jesus was an example over and over how we should serve each other. Jesus always served with love and compassion. As disciples and servants of Jesus Christ we should serve each other the same way. (Matt. 5:43-47)

IS THERE SOMEONE WHO TREATS YOU POORLY OR YOU DON’T LIKE VERY MUCH THAT YOU CAN PRAY FOR?

YOU CAN SERVE THEM BY PRAYING FOR THEM TODAY!

TO BE SERVED

Allow others to serve you. Not only will you be blessed by others but by receiving service from others brings a blessing to them. Don’t deny someone their blessing by refusing to be served. Jesus served by revealing God to us, healing, teaching, blessing and ultimately dying on the cross for us. Jesus gave us all that and more and all He asks of us is to believe in Him and receive the gift of salvation and eternal life He has made possible for us.

Acts 20:35 I have shown you in every way, by laboring like this, that you must support the weak. And remember the words of the Lord Jesus, that He said, ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive. This scripture does say it is more blessed to give than to receive but by saying “more” does mean there is also blessing in receiving from others!!

2 Tim 2:24-26, 24 And a servant of the Lord must not quarrel but be gentle to all, able to teach, patient, 25 in humility correcting those who are in opposition, if God perhaps will grant them repentance, so that they may know the truth, 26 and that they may come to their senses and escape the snare of the devil, having been taken captive by him to do his will.

One of the best ways we can serve others and to serve Jesus Christ is to share the Good News or the Gospel of Jesus Christ with others. The Lord and the angels in heaven rejoice when a sinner repents! (Luke 15:10)

IS THERE SOMEONE YOU CAN SHARE JESUS CHRIST WITH TODAY, EITHER IN PERSON OR IN PRAYER?

Matthew 25:21, His lord said to him, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant; you were faithful over a few things, I will make you ruler over many things. Enter into the joy of your lord.’
